"We travel not to escape our life, but to stop life from escaping us"
Kenora is a beautiful place and a go to for our family for weekend getaways or a stopover on the way to or back from Toronto. So here are 7 of our families top things to do out and about around the Lake Of The Woods.
Take a Hike
Kenora has lots of seasonal walking trail that lets you explore the area. The trails are well maintained in season and great for getting out and about with kids.
Visit Husky The Muskie And The Boise Cascade
It's not every day you come across a forty foot high fish but in Kenora you'll find Husky the muskie. First built in 1976 and then rebuilt in 1995 Husky stands as a symbol of preventing water pollution and has been in loads of movies as a landmark for crossing Canada. Also as you leave the car park to go see Husky you'll find the Boise Cascade a pretty cool tug boat on display and fun to have a look around and climb in and out of.
Take In Some History At The LOW Museum
Although it's a smaller place, Lake of the woods museum packs a great punch. The displays promote a cultural heritage understanding of the lake of the woods. It's a fun few hours for the whole family.
Go For A Paddle
This is probably our favorite activity to do in Kenora. We rent a canoe and just head out for a paddle. Taking a few hours to drift around and paddle around. Both our girl love to paddle and watch for wildlife. Stop off for a picnic or eat with our feet dangling in the water over the side of the canoe. We use us Green Adventures for our rentals, they have really well maintained gear and kids size life vests, plus they are always super helpful.
Jump On Board At The Railroaders Museum
open or closed this is fun spot to visit. If you catch it when its open there are loads of artifacts related to the railroads. outside an engine and carriage are on display. Our girls loved standing up on them and exploring around.
Crack a Cold One at LOW Brewing Company
Built in the old fire hall and selling great craft beer Lake Of The Woods Brewing Company is a must visit when in Kenora. Either sit in a enjoy some delicious food or grab a couple of growlers on your way to the cabin. Either way you really cant go wrong.
Wake Up With Broken Paddle At A Cabin
Finally, when staying around Kenora there is nothing better than renting a cabin and waking up with a coffee sitting looking over the water. With any luck the kids are still in bed and you have picked up some freshly ground coffee from The Broken Paddle to enjoy. There are loads of vacation rental around on AirBNB, VRBO and Homeaway that will blow your mind with their beautiful setting.
