"Being a good dad starts with presence not presents"
Lucy unscrews the lid on the small container and empties it out. A coin, a pin and a sticker fall out and you would think she had won the lottery. Both girls eagerly looks over each items and decide which one they will take and which item from their 'treasure bag' they will leave.
We have been geocaching since before we had kids. It was always a good way to get out walking on or the bikes. We also used it to break up long car journeys and as a way to explore new places if we had a free day on holiday. So now we have kids its only natural that we would do it with them. We all look at the map and decided where we want to go. The girls grab the small zip lock bag with their swapping treasures in andd away we go on foot or by bike around our town.
Now you may wonder why? It seems to easy to find something when you have the GPS coordinates. Well every treasure map has an X, but you still have to do some exploring to find the treasure. This is the same with geocaching, the GPS will get you within a few meters but after that its a real hunt. Sometime you will get hint, other you will have to read other peoples comments to see if there are any clues. Lucy is usually in charge of the GPS and Tilley is in charge of holding the treasure bag. Together they hone in on the cache's location then search with help from us to find it.
These mini treasure hunts are a great way to get our family out exercising and have a lot of fun. The girls are learn some great outdoors skill with the compass on our GPS and learning how to match up the coordinates on the way points. They crawl under bushes, climb on fences and over turn some rocks and eventually are rewarded with a find. However even when they don't manage to find the treasure its still an adventure and really that's what they seem to enjoy the most. So register on Geocaching.com, grab a GPS or a phone or even a map and compass and get out there.
